Meet Our Baker

Donna Feldman, the baker behind the delicious pastries at both McFarlan's locations, has been making magic with flour, butter, and sugar for more than two decades. Donna, who spent the first 10 years of her career at the Ponzio’s Diner in Cherry Hill, learned the century old recipes from the original Christen Family Baker over 17 years ago at the Swiss Pastry Shop. Swiss Haus Bakery bakes the finest Cakes, Pastries, and Cookies using century old European recipes that have been a Philadelphia Tradition for 90 years. In 2007, the Swiss Pastry Shop went out of business and closed its doors forever. Happily, several weeks later, Jim Hausman could not imagine a birthday without the famous Swiss Haus Hazelnut cake so he set out on a mission to find the unemployed Chef of the Swiss Pastry Shop, Donna Feldman, to see if she would like to start a new bakery. Jim found Donna and convinced her not to move to Maine and to stay in Philadelphia to open the Swiss Haus Bakery. Our marketing team fell in love with Donna's desserts and wanted our customers to get to know her better so they sat down with her to talk brioche and banjos.

Micro-development spreads to North Centre

NJ Pen writes that downtown Merchantville NJ is poised for some larger, long-term redevelopment plans, but in the meantime, former urban planner Ryan Middleton is working to reactivate his little corner of the district, one dormant property at a time. For a facility that’s fallen on hard times, the building at 22 North Centre Street in Merchantville still has a great deal of presence. Few clues to its former life as a borough post office remain, save an exterior loading dock with freight doors. Inside, the stepped-up lobby opens into a 4,000-plus-square-foot receiving room that comprises the bulk of the space, belying a surprisingly deep lot. Currently Middleton is promoting the space as Ryan's Retail, open for resale, crafts, pop-ups, etc.

The Station: Coffee/Art/Culture, Merchantville

Whether chosen for their local roasts, unique treats or super cool atmosphere — and maybe even all of the above — these java joints are worthy stops on your travels across the coffee-loving Garden State. Merchantville is a town on the rise in Camden County, and The Station is at its heart. The Station is a cozy coffee house tucked into an old train station near railroad tracks that now serve as biking and walking trails.Since its inception, a Eclipse Brewing, the Juice Bar and Park Place Cafe & Restaurant have popped up nearby. A development project is being proposed for the area, but the coffee house is staying put. The space serves as a gathering place both inside and out (Market Off Centre, the local farmers' market assembles just outside). Look for art exhibits, book signings and other creative events. https://www.courierpostonline.com/get-access/?return=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.courierpostonline.com%2Fstory%2Flife%2F2018%2F09%2F25%2F11-unique-new-jersey-coffee-houses-worth-exploring-international-coffee-day%2F1268587002%2F
