Winter edibles

Garlic mustard - a winter edible. The roots of garlic mustard are best gathered when the plants are dormant (in the colder whether), when they are at their most flavorful. They can be used in cooked dishes such as stir fries or stews, but they are probably better used as a condiment. They have a flavor similar to horseradish, though somewhat milder. I have often ground them up in vinegar, with a little sugar added as a substitute for horseradish sauce. However, one of the best ways to use and preserve the roots is to dry them out and grind them into a spicy powder that can be sprinkled on food or used as a flavoring in cooking.

Continuing The Conversation About Addiction

Bill Rube has been involved in the hunter/jumper world most of his life. He and his husband Joe Miraglia live in Merchantville, New Jersey, and Rube works as the executive director for the Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Foundation. He celebrated 35 years of sobriety on July 26. "One Year Later: Continuing The Conversation About Addiction" is a follow up piece to an article he penned in The Chronicle of the Horse magazine in October 2017. While Bill is very open about his sobriety, there are many who are still unaware of this. He hopes these articles will help spread a message of hope and strength by starting a conversation and chipping away at the stigma associated with the disease.
