The Society restored and owns the Peter Mott House Underground Railroad Museum, named for an agent on that clandestine network to freedom for those escaping enslavement.Mrs. Shockley’s many other activities include serving as a commissioner of the Camden County Cultural and Heritage Commission, a member of the New Jersey Review Board for Historic Sites and secretary of Preservation New Jersey, a statewide historic preservation advocacy group. MHS believes this will be an exciting addition to the celebration of Merchantville’s history and our 150th anniversary. We hope to see you there!

Underground Railroad Talk
Please join the Merchantville Historical Society when we help celebrate Black History Month by hosting noted local historian Linda P. Shockley, who will speak on “The Underground Railroad in South Jersey,” at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21st, at the Community Center. Mrs. Shockley is president and a founding member of the Lawnside Historical Society, Inc., where she learned the unique history of the town shaped and governed by African Americans.

Art Reception Planned
Eilanarts Center invites you to join them on January 30th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. for the art reception of their current show "The Shape of Color".
