Prepping for beans

Soil preparation began along the tennis courts at Wellwood Memorial Park, between Linden and Hamilton Avenues, today for one of IE Merchantville's small action, edible garden projects. Core working group members, Joan Brennan and Marie Hanna, worked to clear the brick perimeter planter of leaves, weeds and debris to lay the groundwork for "Jack's Beanstalks" plantings that will grow up and along the built-in chain link trellis around the courts.

FoodSmiles St. Albans

Sometimes finding a suitable growing site is just the start of the journey.  This story from Incredible Edible St Albans shows how shear determination and playing the waiting game can result in an Incredible new community growing space. FoodSmiles St Albans, a small Community Supported Agriculture scheme, had been going for a couple of years, when the local council offered them a new opportunity: an unloved piece of land in the middle of St Albans town centre, next to an NCP car park, which they thought would be great to create a community garden. Little did Naomi know it would be 2.5 years later before the growing started.

SEED: The Untold Story

Several residents gathered at Eilandarts Center to view a screening of "SEED: The Untold Story" on Friday, March 29th hosted by Incredible Edible Merchantville. The movie chronicles passionate seed keepers protecting our 12,000 year-old food legacy. Few things on Earth are as miraculous and vital as seeds. Worshipped and treasured since the dawn of humankind. In the last century, 94% of our seed varieties have disappeared. As biotech chemical companies control the majority of our seeds, farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers fight a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food. In a harrowing and heartening story, these heroes rekindle a lost connection to our most treasured resource and revive a culture connected to seeds.

February IE Merchantville meeting

On the agenda tonight for the IE core working group is a a proposal to move froward with their Innovative Community Project called Incredible Edible Merchantville. Joan Brennan and Betsy Langley will present the proposal so that it can be finalized before submission to Mayor and Council. Building a bug hotel

Some of you might think it’s crazy to start thinking about gardening when winter is just getting started, but the opposite couldn’t be more true! When the wind is howling and snow is piling up outside your window, is there any better way to lift your spirits than to think of the warmer weather that’s just a couple of months away, and the amazing garden you can cultivate once it returns? Building a Startup From Scratch in Camden

Three ambitious co-founders want to turn what was once America's most dangerous city into a thriving ecosystem for entrepreneurs. For two years, Tran and his business partners, Johnathan Grzybowski and Melissa Thi Le, have been trying to build that ecosystem almost from scratch to demonstrate that tech companies can thrive in Camden, New Jersey. "Penji is the poster child that will be an example to other startups," says Penji co-founder Khai Tran. "Even in an underserved community, you can be very successful." To pay his way through Rutgers, Tran freelanced as a web designer. IE 2019 Kick-Off Meeting

Incredible Edible Merchantville is scheduling a kick-off meeting in early January and hope that many residents, Green Team and Garden Club members will be able to attend. We'll be giving updates on progress and partnerships developed since our December meeting and discuss plans for moving forward in 2019. Art Reception Planned

Eilanarts Center invites you to join them on January 30th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. for the art reception of their current show "The Shape of Color".
